Upgrade your Radio Certificate to GMDSS


Do you hold a RYA VHF (Restricted VHF only) Certificate

for GMDSS communications.

VHF to GMDSS SHORT RANGE UPGRADE

Upgrade your VHF certificate to Short Range (SRC) in half a Day.
If you already hold a VHF radio operator's certificate you may upgrade it to a GMDSS SRC. The course is half day and you will participate the afternoon of the regular SRC course. In addition to the GMDSS element you will be required to answer some VHF Distress and Regulations questions.

R/T RESTRICTED (SSB) to GMDSS LRC UPGRADE Courses

If you already hold a SSB Restricted Operator's Certificate it is possible to upgrade this to a GMDSS qualification namely, the Long Range Certificate. The LRC is a valid GMDSS qualification for all vessels under 300 GRT, and is useful for Leisure craft, fishing and small commercial vessels.
To upgrade to the Long Range Certificate candidates must pass an examination on the GMDSS system (DSC Module). If required they may also take the Satellite module.

DSC Module Syllabus :

    Understanding of the GMDSS system
    Knowledge and practice of Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on VHF, MF and HF
    Understanding and Practical Operation of :
    NAVTEX
    Emergency Position Indicating Beacons (EPIRBs)
    Search and Rescue Radar Transponders (SARTs)

Cost : Upgrade Course £80 Examination Fee £33

Bring your R/T Restricted Certificate for inspection by the examiner
2 Day DSC & Satellite Module Course £150 Exam Fee £66 (examination second day)

Although we don't quite understand why, there is not a big demand at present for this course.
We tend to run LRC upgrade courses on a ad-hoc basis when we can get a few people together.
