The MCA grants no exemption to holding a GMDSS certificate i.e. for holders of Aeronautical or marine VHF or old style Restricted radio operator certificates.

Officers who hold UK certificates who have to comply with requirements of the STCW Code must have their GMDSS Certificates endorsed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Please note UK GMDSS Certificates issued before January 1994 are not acceptable for endorsement.
To obtain this endorsement the following should be sent to the MCA.
The orginal GMDSS Certificate (General or Restricted Operator's Certificate)
Certificate demonstrating proficiency in fire-fighting, survival and first aid or a copy of a UK Certificate of Competency.
A valid Medical Certificate
Entries from the discharge book showing one year, in the last five at sea.
